How the UK calculation works

For a £50,000 salary, taxable income is £50,000 − £12,570 = £37,430. Income Tax is 20% of £37,430, or £7,486. Employee National Insurance is 8% of £37,430, or £2,994. Estimated take-home pay is therefore £39,520 a year, or about £3,293 a month.

Above £100,000, the Personal Allowance begins to reduce. For a closer look at that taper, use the UK £100k Tax Trap Calculator.

United States option

The United States selection is a simplified 2026 estimate for a single filer. It uses the $16,100 standard deduction, 2026 federal income-tax brackets, Social Security at 6.2% up to the $184,500 wage base, Medicare at 1.45%, and the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax above $200,000. It does not include state or local tax, credits, itemized deductions, pre-tax benefits, self-employment tax or another filing status.

Does this calculate Scottish Income Tax?

No. The UK option currently uses the bands for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scottish taxpayers should use an official Scottish-tax calculation.

Why can my payslip be different?

Your tax code, pension, student loan, benefits, payroll timing and other income can all change the result. The calculator is a planning estimate, not a replacement for your payslip or HMRC.
