What is a Time Duration Calculator?

A time duration calculator helps you calculate the difference between two times. It is useful for tracking hours worked, travel time, and daily activities.

How It Works

The calculator finds the difference between the start time and end time and converts it into hours and minutes.

Example

If the start time is 9:00 AM and the end time is 5:30 PM:

  • Duration = 8 hours 30 minutes

Where It Is Used

  • Work hours tracking
  • Time management
  • Travel schedules
  • Daily planning

Why Use This Calculator?

It provides quick and accurate time differences without manual calculations.

Calculation Method and Tested Examples

The calculator converts both times into minutes after midnight and subtracts the start value from the end value. When the end time is earlier than the start time, it treats the end time as occurring on the following day.

Example 1: 9:15 AM to 5:45 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes. Example 2: 10:30 PM to 6:15 AM is 7 hours 45 minutes because the calculation crosses midnight. Example 3: if the start and end times are identical, the calculator shows the message “Start and end times are the same” instead of a duration, because a zero-length result and a full 24 hours cannot be told apart from the clock times alone.

This tool calculates clock-time differences only. It does not apply dates, time zones, daylight-saving changes, unpaid breaks, or payroll rounding rules.

Time Duration Calculator FAQ

How do you calculate the time difference?

Convert each time to total minutes, subtract the start time from the end time, then convert the answer back into hours and minutes.

Can it calculate an overnight shift?

Yes. If the finishing time is earlier than the starting time, the calculator assumes the finish is on the next day. The Overnight / crosses midnight checkbox is only needed when the start and end times are the same.

Does it subtract breaks automatically?

No. The result is the full elapsed time between the two clock values. Use the Work Hours Calculator when you need unpaid breaks deducted, weekly totals or estimated pay.

Assumptions and edge cases

The tool compares clock times without attaching them to a location or time zone. When the end time is earlier than the start time, it treats the finish as the following day. For example, 22:30 to 06:15 is 7 hours 45 minutes. It does not apply daylight-saving clock changes, unpaid breaks, overtime rules or rounding policies.

For payroll, compare the result with your employer’s timesheet rules. Some systems round each clock event or work segment, while others round only the final daily total. The optional pay field multiplies the decimal hours by the hourly rate you enter and applies no tax, deductions or overtime uplift. Use the Work Hours Calculator for break deductions and weekly totals, or the Time to Decimal Calculator to convert an HH:MM figure into payroll decimal hours.

Quality checks and review note

The calculation is checked by converting each time to minutes after midnight, subtracting the start from the end, and adding 1,440 minutes for an overnight finish. The result is then converted back to hours and minutes. Last reviewed and tested on 19 August 2026 by Badar Ashfaq. See our editorial policy and methodology.
