How to Find the Discount Price (3 Easy Methods)

Method 1: Quick Mental Math

For common discounts like 10%, 20%, 25%, or 50%, use these shortcuts:

  • 10% off: Divide price by 10, then subtract. £80 item → 10% = £8 off → Pay £72
  • 20% off: Multiply price by 0.8 (or divide by 5, then subtract). £100 → Pay £80
  • 25% off: Divide by 4, then subtract. £200 → 25% = £50 off → Pay £150
  • 50% off: Divide by 2. £60 → Pay £30

Method 2: Calculator Formula

To find the discount amount:
Discount Amount = Original Price × (Discount % ÷ 100)

To find the final price after discount:
Sale Price = Original Price − Discount Amount
OR: Sale Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount % ÷ 100)

Example: £150 jacket with 30% off
→ Discount = £150 × 0.30 = £45
→ Final price = £150 − £45 = £105

Discount Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate a discount percentage?

Divide the saving by the original price, then multiply by 100. For example, if an item costs £80 but is on sale for £60, the discount is ((80 − 60) ÷ 80) × 100 = 25%.

How do I calculate 20% off a price?

Multiply the price by 0.80 (i.e. 1 − 0.20). For example, 20% off £150 = £150 × 0.80 = £120. Or simply enter the values in the calculator above for instant results.

Can I calculate multiple discounts?

For successive discounts (e.g. 20% off, then a further 10% off), apply each discount to the running price — they do not simply add together. A 20% then 10% discount gives 28% total off, not 30%.
